U.S. Labor Organization Reopens Office in Cambodia
The American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) plans to use the office to teach workers and local union leaders how to organize themselves and build more effective unions, representatives told the local Cambodia daily.
"We'll be working with union federations and factory level unions," said Jason Judd, AFL-CIO country representative. "Teaching the principles of organizing and the rights of union workers."
The organization worked on building labor rights in Cambodia, helping it to draft the nation's Labor Law, from 1993 until the country's political infighting of 1997 caused the U.S. government to cut support for many of its projects.
Officials say the organization's return signals Cambodia's new sense of political stability, as well as its potential in the global economy.
